Basic Personality: Squall is in most cases described as rude, confrontational (when faced with stupidity) and has a pessimist attitude toward most things, this meaning he tends to look at things in the worst possible way. He is, even though he would rather not be, a very capable leader. He's dependable, loyal, and would always side with good before evil, which makes up for his negative way of thinking.
Despite his good side, I would like to emphasize on the bad. He has a terrible habit of getting out of things with a "whatever" or "nevermind," and avoids contact with others on an emotional level. He's not fond of putting his feelings into words, and doesn't care to hear the thoughts or opinions of other's all too much.
Background: Squall remembers nothing before arriving at Neisenma. He began there two years ago. That's how he sees it, and he isn't about to question it further. He would simply wonder from place to place with no real direction for the first few months, until arriving at Midgar.
It was in the slums of Midgar that Squall found his place in this new little world. Once arriving and witnessing the unjust acts of the Shinra corporation, Squall found himself thrown into one of the larger anti-Shinra organizations, lead by a man idolized by many, including Squall himself.
It wasn't long after joining when Squall was confronted by the man, and after a short conversation, much to Squall's dismay, the man begin appointing Squall with a number of important tasks, which lead to a much higher role in the organization. This was of course something Squall couldn't be less pleased about.
After a little over a year went by, things went to hell. The leader was wrongly accused of a number of charges by Shinra, which lead to an infiltration of the anti-Shinra hide out. The leader was killed without warning, causing a divide in the organization. Half the group wants to take action, claiming that fire must be fought with fire, while the other half would rather stick to the pacifist ways of their now deceased leader.
Squall is stuck in the middle, somewhat of an "unspoken leader."
